Attention All Women Who Like to Read!

While we are staying home more and social distancing, now would be a good time to broaden your horizons by reading and at the same time help McCormick United Methodist Women by participating in the UMW Reading Program. To qualify as a Reading Program participant in Program I, you only have to read a total of 5 books (one book in each of the 5 categories on the Reading Program Book List).

Click on this: 2020 Reading Program Book List to see a partial listing of books for this year. To make your participation easier, any books that are not available at the McCormick County Library can be ordered by the Library and you can have them in no more than 5 days!

Click on this: Reader Participation Form to print off a copy and log in names of books read. A list of the books and Reader Participation Forms are also available on the UMW bulletin board at church. For a complete listing of books, see www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/. In addition to the books listed for 2020, books from 2015 – 2019 Reading Programs can be read as well.

To give you an idea of the interesting things you can learn from these books, Under the Education for Mission category, the book When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused To Give Up, highlights Nettie McCormick, wife of Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the reaper, for whom the town of McCormick was named after he bought a gold mine in the town, formerly known as Dornsville. Following her husband’s death, Nettie remained heavily involved in the business and oversaw its generous philanthropic efforts – of particular interest is that she established the Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, SC. She was noted for her vivid interest in the work of Christ knowing that her treasure, truly, was in Heaven – at her death she had supported as many as 446 religious and educational institutions. The book highlights seven other Christian women of history whose lives were equally amazing!

The UMW Reading Program ends August 31. At the Greenwood District UMW Annual Meeting in September, all participants who qualify will receive certificates for their participation. So, start reading and complete your form! THANK YOU!
